Smart-Pore™ : The first biomimetic pore dedicated to cosmetic testing

Being fully transparent, Smart-Pore™ enables you to see in real time the effect your product has on sweat or sebum in and form skin pores. Already used to screen and measure the efficicency of anti-perspirant formulations in a few hours instead of a month for gravimetry, Smart-Pore is also adapted to body care products and make ups. Integrated in Microfactory’s SOD4 proprietary technology, the mechanisms of sweat or sebum emission is reproduced in a controlled manner in a climatic chamber with regulated temperature and humidity.

Gravimetry – the current Gold Standard

A gravimetry study requires 30 subjects to follow a strict protocol for 21 days. on the twenty second, a set quantity of anti-perspirant is applied under one armpit of each subject, who then go in a sauna with absorbing pads under their armpit. After the sauna, the pads are weighed and compared. The whole process takes more than four weeks, and the results can have a large uncertainty (see figure 2).

Other instrumental measurements are possible, however all of them require human cohorts and fastidious washing with neutral pH soaps.

What is Smart-Pore™

Smart-Pore™ is a microfluidic chip containing four independent fluidic microchannels. The larger motifs are the input channels measuring 500µmx60µm and 10mm long. They end in biomimetic channels mimicking the human pore, 60µm wide, 60µm high and 2mm long. These biopores surface on a flat polymer surface representing the skin.

You can see on figure 4 a Smart-Pore™ chip filled with artificial sweat, with a yellow dye added for visibility.

The advantages of integrating Smart Pore into our SOD4 machine

Smart-Pore™ is designed to be used with SOD4, our proprietary instrument able to generate a flow of sweat in microchannels at flow rates similar to those in human sweat glands.

During an experiment, the user can then re-create the contact between sweat and anti-perspirant, see in real-time the reaction inside Smart-Pore™’s transparent pores, and characterize the strength of the clot when one is formed.

SOD4/Smart-Pore™ is a new technology enabling for the first time a visualisation of the interaction between sweat and cosmetic products within biomimetic pores in real-time. This opens new possibilities for fast and reliable in vivo testing of cosmetic products.

For anti-perspirant formulation testing, our instrument provides results up to fifty times faster than gravimetry, with better reproducibility.

Sweat on demand 4 (SOD4): a must have in the field of cosmetic testing

SOD4 regulates the flow inside Smart-Pore™ to keep sweat level with the pores’ surface. At the beginning of the experiment, the user spreads a given quantity of anti-perspirant on the surface of Smart-Pore™ and close the climatic chamber. Afterwards, the formation of the clogs inside the biopores can be observed with SOD4’s integrated mciroscope and the kinetics of the reaction quantified. During the experiment, the environmental conditions can be controlled (temperature and hygrometry). After the end of the experiment (typically after one hour) the instruments ramps up the pressure until unclogging happens. The unclogging pressure indicates the solidity of the clogs and thus the efficiency of the anti-perspirant.

With SOD4, you can start getting results on the efficiency of your anti-perspirant formulation after one hour, with additional data such as images of the kinetics of the clot formation deep inside the transparent pore.

Microfactory has developed SOD4’s dedicated software Smart-Pore™ Reader to provide its user with an intuitive, user-friendly interface and clear protocols for their experiments.

The Smart-Pore™ Reader interface allos the user to control easily parameters such as temperature, hygrometry and the motorized movement of Smart-Pore™ for optical focus. After the experiments, results are automatically compiled and processed in excel form, with the main graphs already generated.
